Welcome to the Gay and Lesbian Sierrans (GLS) section of the Loma Prieta Chapter. GLS is an official activity section of the Sierra Club . We offer the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered community a variety of outdoor activities, including day hikes, car camping weekends, and backpack trips, and encourage participation in the Sierra Club's mission to explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth. The first Gay and Lesbian Sierrans section was San Franciso GLS, founded in 1986. The Angeles Chapter GLS won recognition in 1988, after a two-year struggle. Loma Prieta GLS was third, becoming an official activity section in 1991. Its first hike was in Uvas Canyon, led by Mike Zampecini. Since then a number of other GLS sections have been established. GLS operates under bylaws approved by the Loma Prieta Chapter of the Sierra Club. Matters such as establishing the outing calendar, certifying outing leaders, publishing the newsletter, and managing the finances, are entrusted to the Governing Committee , which is elected at the end of each year. You do not have to be a member of GLS to participate in our activities but we do encourage you to join. As a member, you'll receive our bimonthly newsletter, the Wild Side, either in electronic or paper form as you prefer. A short version is always available to everyone. Contact us if you would like a complementary copy of the Wild Side. To keep in closer touch with what's going on, you can join our email list. If you want to get further involved, please consider becoming an outing leader. |
