State & Local Elections: Sierra Club Fares Well (Despite National Losses)

This lection season brought Sierra Club members both victories and disappointments. The good news is that the vast majority of California races in the Loma Prieta area resulted in victory for friends of the environment.
Hikers Hut Celebrates 25th Anniversary

On October 19, almost 50 longtime Sierra Club supporters met at the Hikers Hut in San Mateo's Sam McDonald County Park to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its opening in December, 1977, and to congratulate Ollie Mayer on the tremendous time and energy she has put into nursing this unique overnight mini-lodge in the Santa Cruz Mountains from a gleam in her eye to its topping out.
High-Speed Rail Plans Roll Ahead

With a plan to use the world's fastest trains at speeds greater than 200 mph, San Francisco and Los Angeles would be only 2.5 hours apart. The California High-Speed Rail Authority is considering a number of routes from San Jose to the Central Valley.
Santa Clara County to Decide on Facility Development on Unincorporated Lands

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter has lent its support to the Committee for Green Foothills, Greenbelt Alliance, and the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society in a concerted effort to oppose locating what are known as Large Group Assembly Facilities in unincorporated rural areas of Santa Clara County.
Environmental Groups Sue Re: SFO Scientific Documents

On August 8, 2002, a coalition of Bay Area environmental groups filed a civil action in San Francisco Superior Court against the City of San Francisco and City officials to force disclosure of important documents concerning San Francisco International Airport's highly controversial Bay fill runway expansion. The documents, which City officials have adamantly refused to release, address the potential environmental impacts of the massive Bay fill project.
2002 Legislative Efforts Pay Off

Sierra Club California's efforts in the State Capitol this year resulted in some noteworthy successes although much-needed actions to protect the environment were often blocked by business lobbies and their political allies.
