Hike Fall Lakes and Breathe Crisp Air

Dates: Arrive Friday, November 6th; depart Sunday, November 8th.The forest is showing off beautiful fall colors and it's great that we can hike and appreciate them and breath in the crisp air and enjoy the bright sun. This weekend will take in some great hikes in the central Sierra. Saturday's hike will take us into the Emigrant Wilderness starting at the Gianielli's Cabin trailhead. We'll hike into the wilderness following the historic path which brought gold seekers to the Sonora mines over 100 years ago. Today, it is by far the most pleasant and scenic west-side avenue into the Emigrant Basin's heart. Our destination will be Powell Lake where we will have lunch. This hike will be about 10 miles round trip. After we can soak in the hot tub, have a happy hour followed by a great dinner. On Sunday, we will approach the Emigrant Wilderness from Pinecrest Peak and hike down the vast expanse of beautiful granite toward Waterhouse Lake and the South Fork of the Stanislaus River. This exciting trip, already diverse geologically, passes through four different life zones. We won't make the entire trail and will keep the hike to 10 miles or less based upon participants desires. This trip will be based out of my cabin called Lucille's Cabin in the Pinecrest area, south of Tahoe and just north of Yosemite. Trip cost is $90. per person and includes two breakfasts, two lunches, one dinner. Make checks out to Sierra Club and be sure to include your name, address, phone number and email address. This information is necessary to help me facilitate carpools. Carpools are highly recommended by the Sierra Club. For information, contact Leader Joe Schmidt at 650 592 1458 or josephaschmidt@yahoo.com. For information about my cabin, go to google and enter Lucille's Cabin" For information about the area, go to www.tcvb.com or www.thegreatunfenced.com Rain will not cancell; however a change to other fun activities may be appropriate. Teague Hill OSP hike

As usual, this will be an aerobic and beauty appreciation hike in the closest-to-wilderness place I know of around these parts. Formerly, and still, an equestrian riding area, Teague Hill includes primitive trails, an absence of trail names or signs, but beautiful and mostly untouched (except by mother nature) forest and flora. Tall redwoods and madrones are plentiful. I'll do my best to come up with a route we haven't done recently, and we will plan on doing 7-9 miles with 1800-3000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. This is NOT an easy hike, and I would like to go at a relatively fast (not running but fast) pace so please come only if you are in good shape and believe you can handle the primitive trails, the elevation gain, and the fast pace. We need to go at a fast pace to squeeze in the distance and elevation and still get back at a reasonable time. An occasional snapshot is okay (it IS a beautiful place) but please don't see this as a picture taking event. Bring lunch, plenty of liquid and a sense of adventure - as with the fallen trees across the trails and occasional falling limbs. Layered clothing is recommended (light for going up the hills, but warm for lunch) and footwear with good deep tread. Meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO THE TENNIS COURTS. From 280, take the Woodside Road exit, then Woodside Road to and through Woodside for 1.2 miles. The school will be on your left not too far after the firehouse. Turn into the parking lot right next to the tennis courts. If for any reason this parking lot is full and there is room to park on the streets, that should work. If the parking lot is inaccessible due to a parade, etc., we will meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Town Hall that is back 0.6 mile (0.6 mile from 280). Apparently there is no public transportation into Woodside, so I would like to offer a ride to anyone who can't or doesn't want to drive. I will be leaving from the vicinity of De Anza College at 10:20 AM or we could possibly negotiate another pick-up point. Also, if anyone would like to meet me at my home in south San Jose at 7:00 AM and do the De Anza Flea Market for a couple of hours before the hike, I'd be happy to have you ride with me, or you could meet me at De Anza College at 7:30 AM. Please call or email me to arrange any of these. There are usually no restrooms open at the Woodside School, and definitely none in Teague Hill. I now have a cell phone in case your need to contact me the day of the hike - 408-833-0955, but would appreciate you calling my home phone otherwise. Once again, this will be co-listed with SOC and GOC. Continuous Heavy Rain cancels. Event covers 7-9 miles, with 1800-3000 feet of elevation. Meeting location: Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO THE TENNIS COURTS (or Woodside Town Hall, see above) Leader: Craig Keith, 408/227-0196, clkeith9@sbcglobal.net

Crystal Springs Newcomer’s Hike & Dinner

This is a great hike for meeting and socializing, followed by good, cheap food and live music. What could be better? We will meet at Sawyer Camp Trail, which runs along Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo at 4pm, 4:15pm actual departure. This trail is wide, flat and paved, which facilitates conversation. I lead walks at a pace more suited to enjoying the wonderful views, looking for wildlife, and enjoying conversation that to getting aerobic exercise. We will walk for about ninety minutes (about 4 miles). Children are welcome. After the walk, we deserve some tasty calories, so we will go to Micha’s, at 1754 Laurel in San Carlos. Micha’s features home cooking, lots of BBQ, and reasonable prices. They have live music, usually jazz or blues starting at 7pm. Vegetarians will like the portabella sandwich. You are welcome to bring beer or wine, and they have a low corkage fee. Feel free to bring a bottle of wine to share. It’s a friendly place! Please bring cash to pay for your meal. Directions: Sawyer Camp Trail, which starts where Crystal Springs Road intersects Skyline Blvd. Parking is on the street in the immediate vicinity of the trailhead. This is accessed from Hwy 280 by taking the 'Bunker Hill Drive' exit. This exit is one exit North of where Hwy 92 crosses 280. Take the Bunker Hill Drive. exit off 280 and go left at the stop sign. This will take you over the freeway overpass. At the next stop sign, go right, and follow this road down the hill and over the bridge (~1 mile) until you get to the trail head, which will be a large iron gate on your left. Don't look for us at the iron gate -- we'll be inside, a few yards along the beginning of the trail. No RSVP, but for info contact Peter Andree handchiro@yahoo.com or my cell (650)400-4071.

Four Shillings Short House Concert

(dedicated to Lucy Martineau Proulx)
This special house concert/potluck features Aodh Tuama & Christy Martin of Four Shillings Short(4ss), a remarkable duo playing upbeat, beautiful and highly entertaining music on a wide variety of instruments rooted in Celtic and American Folk, a diverse and inventive traditional music adventure. You can check them out at fourshillingsshort.com. They are rooted here on the peninsula, but perform a heavy concert schedule to many loyal fans throughout the U.S. and Europe. This marks the 20th anniversary of their last concert for LPSS led by Lucy (Martineau) Proulx at Howard Levitan's house and it is dedicated to the memory of Lucy who just passed away from a very long and inspiring battle with cancer. We hope that the many Sierra Singles who enjoyed Lucy's infectious humor and positivism will come and share favorite memories with David Proulx and hear one of her favorite groups. Lucy led hundreds of events from hikes (remember the full moon hikes with scary stories?) to vegetarian potlucks and much more. The event will be at the just completed mountain home of Howard and his wife Kazuyo in Cupertino. Event is limited to about 30 people, so reserve soon. Potluck: Please bring food (salad, entree, sides, or dessert) and a beverage to share plus your own cups/plates/utensils to reduce waste. A $10 donation for 4ss is requested. This will be paid at the concert. Carpools are required due to limited parking. Directions will be given to the drivers at Carpool #8 by the Carl's Jr. at Homestead and Sunnyvale-Saratoga. Please be there at 2:45pm so we can leave the carpool point at 3:00pm sharp! To reserve, please contact leader and tell him how many are coming and their names. Meeting location: #8 Cupertino, Any Mountain parking Leader: Jack Borok, zchok@aol.com
