Walk to Fireworks in Mountain View

Come watch the Shoreline fireworks from close up! We'll set out from a spot in Mountain View where there's parking available, then walk to Shoreline before the crowds gather, claim a good viewing spot, and hang around socializing and snacking while we wait for darkness and the beginning of the fireworks. The walk will be about 3 miles each way, almost completely flat, at a moderate pace. Bring goodies to share, maybe a tarp or blanket to lie on, a flashlight for returning after dark, and extra layers in case it gets cold. If you want to bring a lawn chair, just remember -- you'll have to lug it all that way! We should return around 11. Directions: Meet at Whisman Park on Easy Street in Mountain View. From 101 take the Ellis St. exit and go south to East Middlefield. Turn right on Middlefield, go about 0.7 mile, and turn right onto Easy. Whisman Park is on the left. All participants must know how to swim (if you tip over your kayak you will have to get back in by yourself), must have sufficient upper body strength to paddle for two hours at a time, and must not have back or wrist problems that can impair your ability to paddle the kayak. This activity starts at 9:30 am and ends around 4:00 pm. There will be an optional dinner stop at the conclusion of the activity. Limit: 20. Cost: $33.00/person; fee covers the use of a kayak, paddle, life jacket, wet suit, paddle jacket, and dry bag. Sat, July 05 * 11am
Teague Hill Hike
Join me for an aerobic and beauty appreciation hike in the closest-to-wilderness place I know of around these parts. Formerly, and still, an equestrian riding area, Teague Hill includes primitive trails, an absence of trail names or signs, but beautiful and mostly untouched forest and flora. Redwoods and madrones are plentiful. I'll do my best to come up with a route that we haven't done recently, and we will plan on doing 5-7 miles, with 1500-2000 feet of cumulative elevation gain (last month we did 6.9 miles and 2200 feet). This is NOT an easy hike, and I would like to go at a reasonably good pace so please come only if you are in reasonably good shape (This will NOT be a slower Teague Hill hike that I've done before, and will do more in the future). Bring lunch, plenty of liquid and a sense of adventure - as with the fallen trees across a few trails that are often there - and other new and different surprises. Layered clothing is recommended and footwear with good deep tread. Meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO THE TENNIS COURTS. From 280, take the Woodside Road exit, and then take Woodside Road to and then through Woodside for 1.2 miles. The school will be on you left soon after the firehouse. Turn into the parking lot right next to the tennis courts, not anywhere else. If for any reason this parking lot is full or inaccessible, we will meet in the parking lot of the Woodside Town Hall that is back 0.6 mile (0.6 mile from 280). Apparently there is no public transportation into Woodside, so I would like to offer a ride to anyone who can't or doesn't want to drive. I will be leaving from De Anza College at 10:20 AM or we could possibly negotiate another pick-up point where there is public transit. Also, if anyone would like to meet me at my home in south San Jose at 7:00 AM and do the De Anza Flea Market for a couple of hours before the hike, you're welcome to ride with me. Call or email me to arrange any of these. There are usually no restrooms open at the Woodside School, and definitely none in Teague Hill. Heavy rain (unlikely) cancels. Event covers 5-7 miles, with 1500-2000 feet of elevation. Meeting location: Woodside Elementary School NEXT TO THE TENNIS COURT Leader: Craig Keith, 408/227-0196, clkeith9@sbcglobal.net;

Let's explore some different trails in Monte Bello!. We will park at Skyline Ridge, but cross over Skyline to enter Monte Bello via the White Oak Trail. From there we will do a loop via the old familiar Canyon Trail back to the White Oak trail. This hike is a little shadier than the standard, as we will be mostly hiking through the oak forest. Cache Creek Innertube Float
Join me in the most fun you might have this summer! Far superior in fun to rafting. It's that time to say welcome to summer with a splash and a smile. Cache Creek is a wonderful controlled flow hidden among a grass and rocky gorge northwest of Davis. Involves very little effort and just the (safety) requirement of being able to swim. Requires an innertube and life vest on your part which are inexpensive or easily attainable. The plan is to carpool up to the creek early on Saturday morning. We will be on the creek/river for about 5 hours (6 miles). An enjoyable option on the way home is to have a light dinner ($10-18) in the rustic town of Winters. Plan on this as an all day event that may be the highlight of your summer. To sign up send 1 thru 4 of SIN list, and a check for $7 to Leader: Tom Morse 1188 Walnut St. San Carlos, CA 94070. Complete details will be mailed or e-mailed to you. Fee is for well stocked ice chest and sundries. Sorry, no refunds. Deadline; July 9 Questions? 650.593.5123 Check should be made out to: Sierra Singles Meeting location: Redwood City - 7:25AM Leader: Tom Morse, TripBTom@aol.com

Wunderlich Park Stroll and lunch
We will go for about a ninety-minute stroll in Wunderlich Park, followed by optional lunch at Max's Opera Cafe. The trail is hilly, but not really steep, and I lead hikes at a pace more conducive to conversation and nature watching than aerobic exercise. If you find some of the longer hikes intimidating, this is the hike for you! Children who can walk steadily for ninety minutes are welcome on this hike. To reach Wunderlich, take Woodside Rd. 2.7 miles west of 280. Look for the rather small brown entrance sign on your right. This sign is very easy to miss, so note your odometer at 280. When you get to the parking lot, look for the guy with the clipboard. Parking can be tight, and those who would like to carpool can meet at my office parking lot at 950 Woodside Rd., half an hour before the hike starts. There is no park entrance fee. After the walk, we will reward ourselves with a great meal and good conversation at Max's Opera Cafe. Please bring cash to pay for your meal. No RSVP but for information, call Peter (650) 400-4071 or email handchiro@yahoo.com Heavy rain cancels. Event covers 5 miles, with 600 feet of elevation. Meeting location: Wunderlich Park, Woodside. Fence Construction at Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED-Limit 15 people. One of the neat things about doing work projects is you get to go places and do things that are not normally allowed in the parks. This one is no exception. We've already built 3 fences there. We may also be treated to a tour of this preserve if we have the time and energy. No experience is necessary. Sat- Sun, July 26 - August 3
Twin Lakes to Tuolumne Meadows Backpack
Yosemite's northern region is the most wild of all Yosemite. Backpacking through here has been called more spectacular than in Europe or the Rockies; this route is 48 miles (no cross-country) by way of the Pacific Crest Trail crossing Matterhorn and Virginia Canyons with visits to large mostly granite lakes which include Benson Lake known as the Riviera of the Sierra and, five others. So the trip can stop in the middle of Yosemite to enjoy this isolated and less traveled region, we stay out nine days, to backpack six days, keep the same camp three layover days, and still you need only miss one work week. The rating is moderate-strenuous overall, one or two of the backpacking days will be at the 8-mile, 2000 foot elevation rating (3C), and all other days will be easier. Ideas I have, for layover days, include a day hike down the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River to Waterwheel Falls, cross-country exploration, and maybe a climb of an easy peak. I supply all meals, libations, and hors d'oeuvres. My self-deprecating personality won't allow me to claim the best trip of the summer, and besides, you ought to judge for yourself! Ask me about major equipment you will need. This is a shuttle trip so we need no less than one car at the start and the end. Trip fee is $132. Limits: 6 - 12. Deadline to reserve is July 13th. Contact leader by email to reserve. Meeting location: Tuolumne Meadows Leader: Vince Coit, vince.coit@sbcglobal.net
